Orysia Dawydiak, Akbash Dogs International (ADI), summits the following notice:
To be placed on a waiting list for a future Akbash Rescue, please Email Mike Peters, ADI Rescue.
Lynn Allen in Rhode Island would like to place her two neutered male Akbash
Dogs. These dogs are a little more than 2 years of age. They have been
raised with livestock (miniature horses and sheep) in a small farm, fenced
pasture environment [Four board horse fence with hot wire on top].
Lynn and her husband are selling their farm and livestock. They would like
to place their two Akbash Dogs in good home(s), where they will be
appreciated and cared for. The dogs will be placed-not sold-to the right
owner(s), but any shipping costs will have to be the responsibility of the
new owner(s).
In a telephone conversation last night, Lynn told me that both dogs worked
for them. After passing through the initial stages of puppyhood and
adolescence, which involved some chasing and playing with the miniature
horses--but much less so with their sheep--the dogs have been working well
as guardians of their livestock.
Lynn did not think there would be any problem in placing the two dogs in
separate homes. [In other words, they are not "bonded" with one another.]
In fact, Lynn suggested that placing them in separate homes might encourage
each dog to develop further on his own.
Following is a very brief description of each dog:
Ak Veli White Bird: medium coat male(neutered), born 7 December 1995; Sire:
Sabahattin White Bird (OFA fair); Dam: White Bird's Colorado Belle of
Circle Bar (OFA good)
Ak is VERY ALOOF with strangers. He stands back and watches them
suspiciously. Apparently, he is or tries to be the most dominant of the two
Akbash males. [He is about 6 weeks older than the other neutered Akbash Dog
male.] However, he does NOT challenge the older (8 year old) Pyrenees - the
Allen's first livestock guardian dog. Ak respects the 4 foot fencing and
hot wire on top of it, but Lynn tells me that he IS a digger and that they
don't totally trust him at night. Therefore, he sleeps in the barn at night
where he can't get out and get himself into trouble!
Kartopu White Bird: long coat male (neutered), born 22 January 1996; Sire:
WB's Komax of Odessa Farms; Dam: Katie White Bird
Kar is very outgoing and friendly with people. He is also very good with
livestock. Lynn tells me that he shows NO inclination to roam and that he
and their Pyr are out all night with the animals. While Ak continues to
establish his "dominance" with Kar, Kar does not always accept this. The
two did have one significant encounter, but neither one came out being "top
dog." The encounters seem to be mostly related to "food protection."
Realizing this, Lynn and her husband feed the dogs in separated areas. Ak
gets fed in the barn; Kar and Timber (the Pyr) get their food in very
different areas of their farm. That seems to be working for them.
If anyone is interested and qualified - or has a friend who is
interested and qualified - to adopt one or both of these two dogs, then
Lynn invites you or them to contact her directly. Her email address is on
the "cc" line above, but if you are seriously interested, then you should
call her at telephone: (401) 539-2950.
