Great Pyrenees For Adoption

Great Pyrenees Rescue in Texas

Shortcut To List of Pyrs in Need

Successful placements!

Pam Batley and Rita McAfee have coordinated Great Pyrenees Rescue in the Houston Texas area for more than than 12 years, averaging 10+ rescue dogs/placements per year. Fifteen Pyrs were rescued and placed in 1997. This year has started off with a bang...6 dogs are available so far and it is only February!

The Pyrs on listed this site are available for adoption. During foster care, these dogs have been exposed to goats, a mini horse, a duck, other dogs, cats and lots of people and kids. These dogs, with a little bit of guidance, would make a great family farm dog. They are not suitable for remote livestock guardian dog positions (they will not stay in a pasture with goat/sheep by themselves). All the dogs are heartworm check dogs and started on heartworm preventative. The dogs are vaccinated including Rabies vaccination, spayed and neutered. The dogs are observed and temperament tested to the best of our ability. Adoption fee is $100.00 (plus shipping where applicable). Larger donations appreciated!

To be eligible to adopt one of these dogs you must:

  • Fill out an application that you will receive and return by postal mail
  • Have a telephone interview after your application has been received
  • Travel to the foster home to meet the dog OR be qualified as an out-of-area adoption.

Request an application and information packet by e-mailing Pam Batley. Include your name, postal mailing address and telephone number and mention this page. After your application is completed and returned, a telephone interview will be arranged. During the telephone interview, additional information may be requested about your living situation and desire for a dog. You can also ask questions about any of the dogs available for adoption. Final decision for matching dog and prospective owner rests with Pam Batley and Rita McAfee. A permanent, loving home is sought for every one of these dogs. Serious inquiries only please!

Due to heavy work schedule, please allow 3-5 days to receive your application and information packet by email.

List of Great Pyrenees for Adoption

Delilah is a 1 yr old solid white female. Rescued from a kill shelter. She will be spayed on 3/24 and will be available for adoption after that date. She is a very sweet girl, likes children and is good with the goat(so far!!) She is current on her shots and heartworm neg.

Echo and Isis( Echo is marked and Isis is solid white) rescued in the puppy mill seizure in Ardmore Oklahoma on 3/19/98. There were 5 Pyrs total and 2 of were to go rescue in OK. The dogs were in bad shape, the famale maybe pregnant. The last Pyr went to an Ardmore Resident who was wanting a Pyr. All the dogs had skin trouble but no mange mites were found on scraping. They were covered in Ticks. My vet recommended they be treated for mange any how so mine have been treated. They both had earmites which are now treated. They have been given a DHLPP and will be given a rabies shot and checked for heartworms as soon as possible. These girls are glad to be eating regular meals. They both were very patient during their baths. They are both sweet girls.

Bianca is 1 1/2 year old female rescued out of a kill shelter but is still in danger because she is heartworm positive. She is an extremely sweet girl. She had weaned a litter of pups already when rescued. She was originally first noticed by animal control because her owner had her on a over head cable with no shelter and no water. Two months later she was found running loose. She still had on tags but the owners had moved and did not come to get her even when sent a registered letter stating she would be put to sleep. She is spayed and current on her shots.
Veterinary treatment will run a *minimum* of $125.00. Those of you wanting to help, please pledge a donation by email, large or small, and mail it to:
Pam Batley
1054 Salter Drive
Houston, Tx 77032
The amount collected will be reported here. If donated funds exceed $125.00, the balance will be applied to spay/neuter/other vet care.

Charlie, solid white, neutered male Pyrenees. He was rescued from a kill shelter. He was found 3 months ago just wandering the streets. No one ever claimed him-- he was approximately 4 mos old when that happened. He is pretty good sized 53 lbs and growing!! He is going to be 110 lbs plus when full grown. He is current on his shots and been started on heartworm preventative. He is very people friendly.

Goliath is a very sweet 6 mos old male-- now neutered that weighs 77 lbs!!! He came from a home with lots of kids and is almost too friendly!! He is on heartworm preventative and is current on his shots and dewormings. Goliath is a good looking solid white boy. He is presently at a foster home but needs a home of his own!!
The following letter came to me from Goliath's Foster Mommy:
Hi Pam,
Well, to tell you the truth....we absolutely LOVE him! Is this what all Pyranees are like? If so, I think I might have to change breeds to rescue. Seriously, he's such a refreshing change from these super smart, active and intense Aussies.
All my other dogs have gotten along just great with him and vise versa, although I think they were quite taken by surprise when I first brought him home. Even Brian thought I mistakening brought home a baby polar bear instead of a dog and said he thinks we should notify the Houston Zoo that we have one of their bears (g)!
He's quite the velcro boy and I think he has learned quite a bit in the last couple of days. The first day we gave up any thought of keeping our clothes somewhat clean, but by yesterday he more or less figured out that jumping doesn't get you anywhere and sitting like a good boy earns you a good cookie. Digging holes, he discovered, is also not a good way to earn cookies and by Sunday I think he figured that out too. He learned (thanks to Heidi and Harry) that even though they have clean water in the drinking bucket, the water in the hot tub is SO much better to drink out of and before long I think they'll show him it's also makes a pretty good doggie wading pool. And by Sunday, it only took 6 Dorito chips to convince him that the porch stairs really aren't that hard. He's really not the most coordinated dog I've ever seen but he finally figured it out.
We also took a bath on Saturday, and I really do mean "we"...I'm not sure who got the wettest (which reminds me that I think I need to stock up on shampoo), and then went for a nice long walk to see how he did on a leash. He did quite well actually and only needs to learn to either walk beside me or a few feet ahead of me, not right in front against or between my knees ("I" only tripped over him once....or maybe it was twice). Anyway, from what I understand it was quite humerous to watch.
He's also a very good helper in the yard and we discovered he has a fettish for baseball hats....they have all been Golieth-ized now :)). When we were putting in new indoor/outdoor carpet on the porch, his job was to hold it down while I was measuring and cutting it which actually worked pretty well...
Anyway, it's going just great and I think I'm going to take him up to PetSmart next weekend for a little outing. He's such a big ham and will do anything to get loved on, so I'm sure he'll draw quite a bit of attention, eh? I'll keep ya posted!
